Recognizing the significance of Remote Sensing Technology in planned development of its vast under-developed and inaccessible areas, the Government of India has drawn up an ambitions space programme which is being executed by the Department of Space, Government of India.

The Government of Madhya Pradesh, aware of the vast potential of natural resources in the state and eager to develop a scientific system of monitoring and management of its resources established a State level Remote Sensing Application Centre at Bhopal under the umbrella of Madhya Pradesh Council of Science & Technology in 1984. This centre has grown into one of largest state centres in the country.
